Google Analytics

Google have just rolled out a new technology designed to track the actions of users through your web site. You can find out about it here:

Google Analytics

Because I like to play with such things (you can get ideas from playing with new technologies, so it’s a worthwhile task in all actuality), I’m running it here. It involves adding a small piece of code into the header of your pages. You can see the snippet of code if you look at the page source. It’s just before the </head> closing tag. However, Google is telling me that it can’t see the code!

I’ll report further on this when I’ve found out what’s going on.

Note: Google Analytics has now picked up the site; see comments for further details.

It appears that whatever the problem was, it has been sorted out, as Google Analytics now tells me that analytics has been successfully installed, and that data is now being gathered. The first reports should be ready in twelve hours, so I will check back tomorrow and see what they say about the site!

There are some very nice tools available on Google Analytics! You need to know two things before deciding to use it:

    1. Your site must have a privacy policy that includes Google’s specific defined text. This is my privacy policy.

    2. If they tell you that the code has not been detected, don’t worry about it! The reason for the trouble was that Analytics was a victim of its own success, and had a lot of problems when it was launched because of its popularity. Things are now settling down, but sometimes the data takes a day or two to filter through into the logs.

It’s totally free, so have a play!
