Mindset Conclusions

I’ve learned a lot about myself when I posted the Mindset Rant. This may in fact become a turning point for me. There are several points I now wish to make, which seem to me to be the most important. Again, the hope is that they will help people.

  1. The Mindset Rant has been my most commented-on blog post, ever, except for one that isn’t in this niche where people are ranting about somebody else (not me). I have found ALL of the comments useful and I would like to thank EVERYONE for contributing to it. I would like to thank you even if you only read it.
  2. I am NOT broken. I am human. There’s a big difference, but in mindset terms, if I think of myself as broken, that’s a problem. It’s not something I do most of the time.
  3. Essentially, I’m still at what I would like to term an infancy stage of my internet marketing career. I am trying things out to find out what works and what doesn’t, and also what I enjoy and what I don’t enjoy. After all, just because a business model works doesn’t mean I should necessarily follow that path. If I don’t enjoy it, I shouldn’t be doing it, because I won’t succeed at it.
  4. Especially in internet marketing, you can do too much training and take not enough action. I don’t have much time in which to do this at present due to the main job, other contracts that take up my time, and family commitments, and yet I still look at quite a lot of training material. I have to cut down on that to give me more time to act.
  5. Even if you are looking at training material, you will not necessarily be able to duplicate a person’s method of success or business model because you are a different person with different experiences to that of the trainer.
  6. Having a mentor may be useful. However, I believe the answer to this question lies with the individual. I have learned many things from books without having a teacher, including as it happens software engineering.
  7. Once again, it hit home that the internet, using as it does the means of written word mainly for communication, is not the best way always to get ideas across. I believe I upset the owner of the Successful Photographers Club somewhat, which was not my intention.
  8. I especially would like to highlight one thing that the owner of the Successful Photographers Club said. “Enjoy the journey.” I may not be achieving the level of success I desire, but I am still making achievements, and I should be proud of that. This is reinforcing the point that I should be doing what I enjoy doing, where possible. I don’t mean that to the exclusion of all else; I don’t particularly like book-keeping, but it has to be done. Still, it’s something that can be fielded out, at the right time.
  9. We need goals, but for most of us it is likely that a purely monetary goal is not enticing enough for us to want to achieve it. If nothing would change in my life just through having a 7-figure bank balance, there’s no point having it. In fact, it would be bad for other people, because the money would be locked away.
  10. Part of mindset is to work out who it is that I would like to be, which does not reconcile with who I am now, and does not necessarily reconcile with the approach I am taking at any given time.
  11. Internet marketers sell a dream, but the gurus themselves are not living the dream. How could they remain gurus if they were? There are JVs to set up an maintain. There are new products to develop. There are e-commerce systems to put in place. The dream they sell is part of the copywriting process, i.e. it’s part of what makes you want to buy their products.
  12. Some people may need management in the shape of accountability partners, or real partners who will tell them to get moving on something, to help them stop procrastinate.
  13. I can come across as an opinionated git at times. :-)
  14. The theme I was using was not that brilliant when it came to threaded comments, so it had to go.

What am I doing about mindset?

I’m going to refocus my efforts on areas that I believe will work for me. For example, one of my weaknesses is organic traffic generation. I’ve seen a lot of products that tell me how to do it, and I know the basics of how to do it, but I tend to fall down at the actually doing it point. Actually, if I can do that, then I can set up a load of high-quality advertising websites and have done with it. Plenty of money to be made there.

I also need to work on myself. I clearly have self-esteem issues, and I do have a tendency to procrastination that I must work on. I stumbled upon a resource that I think will probably be rather useful in helping me work on these issues, which is the following:

http://www.psychologicalselfhelp.org/

It’s basically a free, online e-book, apparently taken from a published work, that takes you through many of these issues and discusses them. One of my problems is that I am somewhat in limbo, having reached a certain plateau in my life. I have achieved most of the things I want to do with my life. I need to work out what person I want to be, and this transcends internet marketing completely.

Please feel free to comment further. I will be reporting on my progress in this blog. Again, that is in the hope that this will help others.

It’s good to see you’re progressing. Even if your profits are non existing or static at a low level, finding out what’s wrong and trying to fix it is progressing.

But changing your mindset by yourself can be a long process. There’s no-one to put any perspective on your conclusions. I know from my own experience here that it’s very easy to come to the wrong conclusions here.

If you’re not looking for a mentor, how about enlisting a friend to hold you to account for your progress?

Your friend doesn’t have to know anything about IM either, although it may be preferable if he/she does.

Write out a ‘to do’ list regularly, daily, weekly or monthly, and give a copy to your friend. It will be her responsibility to verify your tasks are done and done in a timely manner.

Thanks Barry; that’s a good idea, although with family life being such as it is, it is difficult to keep a regular schedule.

Also, I’ve never found the “right” to-do list software. I actually may tackle that someday. I did use Action Enforcer for a while, but there were a couple of things I didn’t like about it. I suspect that it’s a very individual choice.

The one thing I do draw from is the suggestion that I should be enjoying this process, and that is causing me to re-evaluate somewhat.

The other thing is that I have recently done some sales funnel split-testing, and profits are up for my products. As you can imagine, I’m very happy about that!

I’ve also closed a couple of subscriptions, and I’m not buying as much stuff now, which is helping a lot.

Anyway, for now I have to continue with work. Thanks for the comment!

I think you are over complicating this. I wasn’t referring to ‘to do list software’. Just a pen and paper.

    Hi David

Firstly, the new theme is much better :-)

I was not upset or offended by any of your comments. We all have out points of view and spend much of our time defending that point of view, which is a total waste of time and energy of course. I’m far from perfect on this matter, but do strive to listen to all points of view, even if I don’t believe in them.

What does get me going is when people think thier world view is not only the right one, but should be the only one. Again I do this myself from time to time despite my best efforts.

As you say, mindset is so important. Consider this,….
before Roger Bannister ran the mile in less than 4 minutes, it was believed to be impossible. Within months of him doing it, hundreds of other athletes also did it. Why? Because they now believed it was possible?

The most important question we can ask ourselves is……. What do you believe?
